Private Samuel McCall

The background of this man is not known at present. It is possible that he was the Samuel Robert McCall born on 14 November 1898 at Clea, Keady, County Armagh, second of five children of farmer John George McCall and his wife Agnes Jane (née Stewart). At the time of the 1911 Census he was living at Clea with his parents, siblings and a grandmother.

McCall enlisted in the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons Service Squadron between 19 February and 3 March 1915 (No. UD/219 – later Corps of Dragoons No.21261). The squadron, which had been formed as divisional cavalry for the 36th (Ulster) Division, embarked for France on 6 October 1915. A party of at least thirty men, including McCall, had embarked three days earlier, attached to 36th Division Headquarters, many if not all of them serving as batmen to senior officers.

Nothing more has been discovered about McCall's service during the war. On 1 April 1919 he was demobilised and transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve.
